Know your Fungus Foe: Do you Have Mold or Mildew?

mold or mildew

Is that mold or mildew growing in your shower?

When there is a mold problem in your home, it’s important to act fast. Mold can come with serious health effects, and when you recognize it, you should contact a specialist for help. Mildew, the cousin of mold, is more or less harmless, and can be cleaned on your own. Unfortunately, the two are often mistaken for each other. If you’ve got a strange growth of fungus in your home, try and determine whether it is mold or mildew. As always, if you still have questions, get in touch with Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group.

Know Your Mold

Mold is certainly quite common in homes, especially when you consider the vast number of species that exist. One of the most unpleasant species of mold to deal with is black mold. This type of mold is a common problem for homeowners, and can be very dangerous in some situations. The key component to mold growth is moisture. Black mold in particular needs a damp environment to flourish, so this puts places like your bathroom, your basement, and your attic at risk. You’ll recognize black mold by its musty odor, and the hairy texture of its colonies. While it can be black, it can also be a light grey or dark green. Mold can have serious health effects, including respiratory problems, fever, fatigue, and migraines. If you see these signs, or notice an onset of symptoms, don’t hesitate to call for help.

Spotting Mildew

Mildew is easily mistaken for mold, but needn’t be taken as seriously. You can fix a mildew problem without the help of a professional in most cases. One of the most recognizable signs of mildew is the distinct smell of it. Mildew is made up of a very thin layer of fungus filaments called hyphae, and is usually a superficial problem. It generally develops on flat surfaces or fabrics that are allowed to stay wet over a period of time. For example, if you leave clothes in your washing machine, it is likely that they’ll develop mildew. This type of fungus appears as a chalky white dusting, and the health effects tend to be minor if they are noticeable at all. Prolonged exposure can lead to some respiratory issues.
