Tips For Preventing Carpet Mold And Mildew

carpet mold

Mold can linger in your carpet for days!

Washing your carpets regularly, while keeping them clean, can trap excess moisture and cause mold and mildew to grow underneath. Many people are allergic to mold and mildew, not to mention a health hazard, so it behooves you to avoid having it in your home to keep your family healthy. Here are some tips to help minimize the excess moisture that will feed mold and mildew growth.

Clean Your Carpets Outside

If your carpets aren’t attached to your floor in any way, it is a great idea to roll them up and bring them outside to an inclined area. This ensures that when you’re cleaning your carpet, the water streams away. Direct sunlight is optimal, your driveway would make the perfect place.

Use a powerful spray nozzle, like your garden hose and use a sweeping motion to get in between your carpet fibers to release soil, dust, and other particles that we track in from outside. You can also turn your carpet over and spray the underside as well to be extra thorough. Make sure your carpets are bone dry before you bring them back inside as well.

Use The Right Products

Using a detergent that is appropriate for your floor is crucial to keeping mold and mildew from growing underneath. Utilizing a pine-based or ammonia-based cleaner would be great if you can rinse them out thoroughly, like on an area rug or bath mat. If you have carpeted floors that you can’t remove, using a diluted bleach solution can help remove stains and sanitize carpets that may already have mold or mildew growing underneath.

If you use a bleach solution, use 2 cups bleach to 5 gallons of water. Never use undiluted bleach as it will destroy the carpet fibers altogether.

Invest In A Wet And Dry Vacuum

To ensure that your carpet is absolutely bone dry if you are unable to take your carpets outside, it’s wise to invest in a wet-and-dry vacuum cleaner that is capable of pulling the moisture out altogether. You can run your vacuum over the area multiple times until it stops pulling up water. However, this may not be enough. Make sure you can leave windows open, run your air conditioning on high, and use dehumidifiers or carpet fans to remove the moisture from the room you’ve cleaned.
