What is Black Mold?

Toxic black mold

Finding black mold in your home can be scary. Learn about black mold and call Environmental Consulting and Contracting before you become sick!

We have all heard the dangers of black mold. But aside from the color, what else do you really know about it? Let’s take a moment to explore this fungal foe and to learn what to do about it!

What is Black Mold?

Black mold, sometimes referred to as “toxic black mold”, is a commonly used name for Stachybotrys chartarum. It is one of the most common toxic molds found in homes and is extremely dangerous if not taken care of quickly. Black mold is greenish-black in color and is usually slimy because of a wet layer on top. But if its water source runs out, this mold will appear dry and powdery. There are several other types of mold that may look like black mold, the only way to distinguish this toxic mold from other mold is to have it examined by a trained professional.

Symptoms of Black Mold

Toxic black mold gives off a toxin called mycotoxins which can cause many health effects include:

  • Skin inflammation
  • Hemorrhage
  • Respiratory problems
  • Irritation of mucous membranes
  • Mental impairment
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Immune system suppression
  • Damage to internal organs.

These toxins can cause permanent damage to your health and even death in extreme cases.

Getting Rid of Black Mold

If you find black mold or any other mold growing in your home, it is important to call a trained remediation specialist like Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group for mold testing and remediation. These services will help to return your home back to normal and to restore your health. The longer you are around these toxins, the more they will impact your health. While not all molds are as toxic as black mold, they many of them can impact your health by giving you allergy symptoms. The first step to removing any mold from your home is to perform a mold test. This test is done in three parts. The first is to take a sample from your home to make sure there is actually mold present. If that test comes back positive, Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group will test the air in your home to see how bad the mold problem is. The second test is followed up with mold remediation. All moldy materials will be removed from your home and the air in the area will be filtered to eliminate the chance of mold migrating to another spot in your home. After the remediation is complete, we will do a clearance test. This test will tell our mold technicians that the mold has been eliminated completely and your home is now safe to live in again.
