A Guide to Professional Mold Testing

Mold testing and homes

Testing for mold is a job for the pros.

The fear of mold can be very real for homeowners. You’ve probably heard horror stories about mold causing serious health problems, and at the first sign of mold, you may call professionals for testing. What exactly do environmental consulting groups do? How do they test for mold, and what information can they learn? The answers to these questions are often a mystery to people, but it’s important to know what your money pays for. Mold testing professionals go through a process that can range from simple to quite complex depending on the results.

Step 1

When you spot mold in your home, or smell that musty mold smell, you may feel compelled to contact your local mold remediation specialists for testing. The first thing that we will do is take a look at your suspected mold growth and take a sample. This sample is sent off to a lab for analysis. It’s important to start here because the test can undeniably confirm that you have dangerous mold in your home, identify the type, and give specialists a method for cleanup. The results are combined with information learned from observation to determine the spread of the mold and the extent of water infiltration.

Step 2

Sometimes there is enough information gained from the lab testing to move forward with remediation, but sometimes the results aren’t conclusive enough to proceed. When this is the case, air quality testing is the next step. Sometimes mold is present in your home, but hasn’t had a chance to form visible colonies, or is hidden behind walls and floorboards. Samples are sent to a lab for more testing to find evidence of microscopic mold spores that drift through the air by the millions. These lab results can tell professionals exactly what materials are affected, how widespread the mold is, and how it can the problem can be fixed.

Step 3

After professionals have cleaned out the mold, they’ll go through and test the air quality again to ensure that they have done their job thoroughly and that your home is back on the right track to health.
