Do you know what kind of mold could be growing in your home?

There are currently about 100,000 different types of mold out in nature but 150 of those molds could be lurking around your home. Each mold is different and could come in a variety of colors. They also come with a variety of mold exposure symptoms that could affect you and your family. Let’s take a look at these common molds that could be found in your home.

Acremonium

Acremonium is often found on insulation and on sheetrock or drywall. It appears to be white, gray, or brown. This mold can range from a non-threatening mold to a hazardous mold depending on its strain living in your home.

Aspergillus

Aspergillus is a common mold that is often found in homes. This mold can appear gray, brown, green, while, yellow, or black. Aspergillus can be hazardous to your health. These molds have been known to cause infections for people with weak immune systems such as the elderly or the very young. It can also cause allergic reactions such as a runny nose and sneezing. Aspergillus can be found on walls, paper products, clothing, insulation, and on other products.

Alternaria

Alternaria appears either black or gray when it grows in your home. This mold is classified as an allergenic mold and can cause various allergy symptoms. This mold tends to grow in dusty areas, on walls, around windows, in damp environments, on plants, and in other places around your home.

Cladosporium

This mold is the most common of the household molds and can appear green, brown, black, or gray in your home. Many people experience allergic reactions to this mold, however, it could not cause any symptoms in others. Cladosporium can grow in many places including on walls, wood, dust, and insulation.

Penicillium

Penicillium is famed for the modern antibiotics that were developed from it. But just because this mold is famous and useful does not mean it shouldn’t be removed from your home. This mold is considered an allergenic mold and is often found in foods like cheese and fruit, on walls, insulation, and on other surfaces around your home. This mold can appear blue, green, or white.

Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys is often thought of as “black mold.” This mold grows in very damp areas of your home and is a very hazardous mold because of the mycotoxins it releases into the air. Many of these molds look black but not all of them are considered the famed “black mold.”

Ulocladium

Ulocladium usually appears to be black or gray and falls into the allergenic category. This mold favors damp areas and is often found on walls, around windows, and in dusty areas of your home.
