Is it Mold or Efflorescence?

Efflorescence and mold

There are some pretty big differences between efflorescence and mold. Can you tell the difference?

Efflorescence in your basement may look like mold, but that isn’t always the case. These two problems are often confused but they are actually two very different substances. One is easily cleared away while the other can lead to serious health problems. Let’s take a look at these two problems and how you can tell them apart.

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is a white powdery substance that is often found on the brick, stone, or concrete walls of your basement. But what is it? This powdery substance is actually a salt deposit from the stone. As the water evaporated from the stone, a white crystalline substance is left behind. Although it looks like mold on your stones, these deposits do not grow or spread like mold. They also do not cause any health problems like mold.

White Molds

There are over 150 different molds that can grow in your home. While they come in many different colors, there are certain types of mold that come in white. Some common white household molds include penicillium, aspergillus, and cladosporium. Many of these types of mold are dangerous and can pose a serious threat to your home and your health. It is important to have these mold removed as soon as possible.

How Can You Tell the Difference?

While these two materials can look the same, there are some differences you should look for. The first thing you should look for is the location of the substance. If you see the substance on any other material but stones, brick, or concrete, it is mold. Next, take a small bit of water and spray it on the substance and take a rag and gently wipe it away. If the substance is gone, it is efflorescence. If you aren’t sure what is on your wall, ask a professional company like Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group for a mold test to determine if you have mold in your home.

Not every substance in your basement is mold, but not every white substance is efflorescence. If you are worried about your home and health, call us today for a mold test and possible remediation.
