What Can the Colors of Mold Tell You

colors of mold

What does your mold color say about your mold?

Despite being a nuisance, mold does actually serve a purpose. Mold works to keep the planet going by breaking down organic matter. But this does not mean we want it in our homes. When mold is inside, it can cause dangerous health problems like rashes, headaches, allergies, and infection. So no matter the color of mold in your home, it is important to get rid of it as soon as possible. There are many different colors of mold and each of them should be taken care of differently. Let’s take a look at these colors of mold and what they can tell you about the mold growing in your home.

Olive Green, Brown, Grey, or Black Mold

If you see one of these colors in your home, it could mean you have Cladosporium. Outside, this mold lurks on plant leaves, but inside, it is often found on walls, insulation, and damp carpet. This mold has been linked to skin and eye irritations and sinus infection. They have also been linked to fungal meningitis (brain infections).

Blue, Dark Green, or White

These molds, also common in homes, belong to the Penicillium family. But while you may think they are harmless because they were used to make penicillin, this mold could cause allergic reactions. They are usually found on walls and food, like bread and cheese.

Yellow, Green, or Black

These colors are linked to the Aspergillus mold family. But while these molds do not make everyone sick, they can cause a problem for people with existing lung conditions or weakened immune systems in the form of aspergillosis, a variety of diseases and infections. Aspergillosis might entail coughing, wheezing, sinus inflammation, and cavities or balls of fungus in the lungs.

Greenish-Black

Greenish-black mold is of the Stachybotrys family and is actually the infamous “black mold.” This mold is linked to many different problems include memory loss, lung bleeding, and other dangerous symptoms. This mold prefers to live on surfaces that are high on cellulose but low on nitrogen. These surfaces include drywall, gypsum board, paper, and dust.
