Health Risks of Toxic Mold

Toxic Mold

There are many different toxic molds that could be hiding in your home!

If you live in an area where it is humid, you could be at risk of toxic mold growing in your home. Black mold is one of the most common toxic molds found in homes but it is not the only one. So what are some common types of toxic mold that is found indoors and what health risks do they pose for you and your family? Read on to find out!

Types of Toxic Mold

The first toxic mold we should talk about is the Stachybotrys family. These molds are typically the worse and the most talked about toxic molds. Most people refer to Stachybotrys chartarum as black mold but there are other types of Stachybotrys molds out there including aspergillus versicolor and aspergillus fumigatus are two very common molds that are also toxic. Chaetomium is also among the toxic molds that can be found in your home. This mold is actually second in line following Stachybotrys in line for the most toxic molds. The third in this line is Aspergillus, which tends to colonize on continuously damp material like wallpaper, fabrics, and drywall. So what kind of illnesses can be caused by these toxic molds?

Health Risks of Toxic Mold

While many of these symptoms are noticeable, not everyone will experience the same health problems that others will. These symptoms can vary from person to person based on their overall health and age. Some health risks of toxic mold include pulmonary hemorrhaging or hemosiderosis in infants, nose bleeds, immune system suppression, hair loss, chronic fatigue, psychological depression, diarrhea, sore throats, headaches, flu-like symptoms, and dermatitis. Chaetomium’s health symptoms can cause a variety of problems like the common allergy symptoms like coughing and watery eyes, fungal infection in toenails, permanent DNA damage, inhibited cell reproduction, permanent neurological damage, and weakened immune systems. Aspergillus, the third in line for most toxic mold of the year, can cause weakened immune systems, low white blood cell count, lung cavities, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and long-term corticosteroid therapy.
