Myths about mold

Bleach can actually do more harm than good. Let’s take a look at some other myths about mold.

In the age of quick internet searches and fake news articles, it is no wonder that fake information circulates more than truths. There are many different myths about mold and how it affects people when it grows in their homes. While mold can be a serious problem, it may not be as harmful as people think it is. Let’s take a look at some top myths about mold.

Myth 1: All Mold is Toxic

While it is true that many molds can affect your health when you are continually exposed to it, there are actually many beneficial molds out there. Mold is found naturally and works to decompose organic matter like fruit, bread, and even paper. While it is true some molds are toxic, others are useful and some can cause allergic reactions like sneezing and coughing. Certain molds like aspergillus flavus and penicillium are useful to make products like cheese or used to make the medicine.

Myth 2: Bleach Kills Mold

While this mold is half true, bleach does not kill every type of mold and should not be used as a mold removal solution in your home. Bleach only kills live mold, but it does not kill mold spores, also known as mold seeds. Using a bleach and water solution to kill a mold colony in your home can actually lead to more mold setting up root in your home because of the moisture. It is always best to call in a mold remediation for large scale mold problems.

Myth 3: If I Can’t See it, Mold Doesn’t Exist

While the old adage, “seeing is believing” is often true. This saying should not be used in reference to mold. Mold is commonly found in completely isolated places in your home like between the floors, inside walls, in attics, or in crawl spaces. But even if you can’t see the mold, you may be able to smell it taking over your home. Mold has a damp, musty smell that is unmistakable. So remember if you can’t see it, you’ll be able to smell it.

Myth 4: Cleaning Up Mold Isn’t Hard, You Can Do It Yourself

While you may be able to clean up certain types of mold in very small quantities, many people are not equipped to deal with full-scale mold remediation by themselves. Simply wiping away the evidence of mold is not properly getting rid of it. To properly “clean up” mold, you must first identify the cause of the mold, isolate the area, purify the air with an HEPA air filtration unit, and clean and/or remove the affected surfaces.
